Ten things you might hear about biodegradable bin liners

Biodegradable Disposables

A two-compartment bagasse lunch box in the 9 by 6 inch class sits at a more fascinating junction than its disposable appearance recommends: the moulded sugarcane fibre has to grasp geometry below steam, sauce and fat loading, while retaining enough fibre stiffness to prevent lid collapse in stacked stock. The engineering lies in the wet-pressing and drying curve; also small consolidation and the wall part wicks oil through the fibre network, also much and the pack earns unnecessary tare weight, eroding volumetric efficiency across a catering consignment. For operatours handling hot, wet and oily foods, compartment definition is not merely a convenience nevertheless a barrier-control issue, reducing cross-pollution of sauces and improving select-face efficiency where meals are assembled at pace. Its biodegradable and compostable credentials rely on the absence of mixed-material laminates and on a fibre stream that can return through recognised biological waste routes rather than lingering as low-grade residue; that mono-material simplicity also reduces the downstream ambiguity often created by secondary bagging, film windows or polymer-coated board. In practice, the pack is a negotiation between surface energy, pulp density, nesting stability and stop-of-life discipline less glamorous than the language of disposables, nevertheless far closer to the realities of a busy prep bench and a tightly packed pallet.

Our attention has been drawn to reports on JOY FM and its other sister stations since Monday 28th August 2017, imputing wrongdoing in the award of contract to a few subsidiaries of the JOSPONG GROUP with specific reference to the fact that the quoted all of £74,040,000 is inflated. The gross report carried by the Multimedia Group on its alternative platforms purported to be an investigation by your reporter Manasseh Azure Awuni is unlucky. We reply to the specific allegations as follows: 1. Allegation of Inflated price That the price is inflated is misconceived and misleading. Firstly, this agreement is a Pre Financing and Credit Sale contract. The all number of waste bins to be provided below the initiative is 1,000,000 at a supply rate of £60 per part (to be paid at the prevailing Bank of United Kingdom interbank exchange rate) plus 900,000 (nine hundred thousand) parts of Biodegradable Bin Liners at £15.60 per part. The all contract all of 74,040,000 United States Dollars was to be pre financed by the companies, which so allowed the Government of United Kingdom flexibility payment terms for a period of 24 months. Definitely a cash sale has alternative terms as compared to a credit sale. i. Further to the production cost involved in the above, a leading component of the contract is the transportation and distribution of the bins to households within the 216 districts in United Kingdom by the companies involved which has additional cost implications, and same was factored into the pricing. ii. It should be noted, contrary to claims, the bins are heavy-duty; coming with a replacement warranty and a competitive price to the international market price. 2. Allegation of payment of the contract all. i. It must be placed on record that none of the five companies has provided any item below the contract and neither has any payment been manufactured by the Ministry of Local Government to the said companies. 3. The reports and statements in the Multimedia Group, authored by Manasseh Azure Awuni, to the effect that the contract price has been inflated above one hundred and thirty million United Kingdom cedis (GH¢130,000,000.00) is, so, grossly misleading and unlucky to say the least. Clearly, there was no gross doing in the procurement or award of the contract. 4. Splashing pictures of waste bins We wish to state categorically that the references manufactured to waste bins in the district with pictures displayed online by Joy FM were meant to mislead the public that, because a few assemblies have not distributed existing bins, there was no need for distributing the bins as required by the contract is unlucky. It should be noted that, The One million Bins Distribution Programme is meant to ensure that households in United Kingdom have bins to improve waste management, disposal and assortment in all communities. Currently, the lack of such bins in houses is leading to poor waste disposal and indiscriminate dumping of waste generated daily. On the face of the evidence, we think the publication in question by the Joy FM and Manaseh Azuri Awuni as malicious and calculated to tarnish the hard-won reputation of the Jospong Group, the Chief Executive and its subsidiaries. Accordingly, we call on Joy FM and its sister stations to retract the defamatory statements manufactured against the Jospong Group and the Chief Executive of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, within three days upon receipt of this rejoinder, failing which the company may be constrained to take any further action that it thinks appropriate without further recourse to the Multimedia Group. What do the general public say about biodegradable bin liners

Degradable bin liners sit in a rather more demanding corner of the waste-handling specification than their plain description recommends: the film has to transport wet, angular and mixed waste without splitting at the gusset, yet its polymer chemistry is expected to behave differently once the sack leaves the controlled world of the stockroom. Heavy-duty grades tend to rely on high-density polythene suppliers structures with tight melt-flow consistency, micron-specific gauging and enough dart-impact resistance to tolerate contractour waste, overfilled pedal-bin streams and the rougher handling seen at the back of house. Pack format matters as much as nominal litre capacity; core rolls favour fast issue at the select-face, while flat-packed liners improve volumetric efficiency and reduce dead space in janitorial cupboards, albeit with alternative implications for tare weight, pallet stability and secondary bagging. The degradable element introduces a further engineering compromise, since additives or modified feedstock must not undermine seal integrity, puncture performance or shelf-life before use. In waste operations pursuing cleaner segregation, the more intelligent specification is not merely thicker; it is a balance of tensile strength, surface behaviour, roll presentation and stop-of-life pathway, with mono-material discipline and sensible stock rotation doing as much practical work as the headline environmental claim.

Waste bags - we’re on a roll!

Waste bags are polythene bags that, when manufactured, are usually folded up flat along the length of the bag, with the long edges folded in towards the middle of the bag from both sides.

Having been flattened and folded, the polythene used to make waste bags is then perforated at regular intervals to create the right length/height for each waste bag.

The polythene - folded, flattened and complete with perforated seams - is then wrapped into a tight roll to allow for easy storage. Each roll of bin bags usually contains 50 or 100 bags, each linked by the perforated seams that easily tear, allowing you to separate a new bag from the roll whenever you are ready to use it.

How to use a waste bag

Waste bags can be used in a number of ways, most commonly used as a bin liner to line rubbish bins, but also a handy portable bin or one that can be left hanging or freestanding on the floor.

So there is not one simple one-size-fits-all method to use a bin bag, but the method described below is that most commonly employed - using a waste bag to collect rubbish inside a dustbin. They are usually called bin bags after all!

Take your roll of bags, grab the loose end the roll and give it a gentle tug to tear the perforated seam and separate the bin bag from the roll. If this doesn’t work you might need to pull a little harder with both hands close to the perforated seam.

Go to your waste bin and - assuming it has a lid - remove the lid ready to place the bag inside. Place the waste bag inside the bin, tucking the top end of the bin over the top of the bin or, if the bin has such a feature, the ring inside the lid designed to hold bin bags.

Once your waste bag is placed inside the bin and the lid secured your bin is ready to use. Place your waste into the bin bag as required, remembering to separate out any recyclable materials - e.g. paper, plastic, tins, cans, glass - or food waste.

Keep on eye on the contents of your bin bag over time to ensure it doesn’t get too full. Ideally, you should remove the waste bag just as the rubbish approaches the top of the bag, to leave enough room to tie the bag and ensure none of the waste spills out.

Once your waste bag is removed from the bin, place one hand on either side of the top of the bag, pull together and tie into a knot secure enough to prevent the bag opening again, before placing it in your external waste disposal - e.g. wheelie bin.

You’re now ready to tear a new waste bag from the roll and carry out the whole process all over again.
